Welcome to Jailhouse Cottage, Middlemarch

Situated on SH 87 and next to the Kissing Gate Café, Jailhouse Cottage offers comfortable, spacious and self-contained holiday accommodation in Middlemarch. Sleeping six, Jailhouse Cottage is very affordable.

The jailhouse itself is located at the end of the section, nearest the café. Relocated several times, it was finally moved to its current site by the local ex-cop, who resided in the cottage for many years. Originally the jail had two cells, however, one has been partially removed. Fortunately, we do have the missing cell door and plan to restore the jailhouse to its former glory, shackles and all!

Things to do while staying at Jailhouse Cottage include:

• Take a walk down to the Taieri River
• Visit the Strath Taieri Historical Museum (a little ripper)
• View the many wonderful stone cottages in the surrounding area
• Walk up to the Sutton Salt Lake recreational reserve
• Dine at the Kissing Gate Café
• Visit the Middlemarch Railway Station. There you can also check out the Mulberry Cottage Antiques & Collectables. The owner will open on request
